Active and Index Combined Long-Term Mutual Funds and Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs): October 2025

Washington, DC; December 01, 2025—The combined assets of the nation’s active mutual funds and ETFs increased by $176.45 billion, or 1.0 percent, to $17.41 trillion in October while the combined assets of the nation’s indexed mutual funds and ETFs increased by $406.57 billion, or 2.2 percent, to $19.00 trillion in October according to the Investment Company Institute’s official survey of the mutual fund and ETF industry.

Highlights: Long-term active funds—equity, hybrid, and bond funds—had a net outflow of $30.56 billion in October versus an outflow of $5.70 billion in September, while long-term index funds had a net inflow of $101.70 billion in October versus an inflow of $64.91 billion in September.

Active funds
Equity funds posted an outflow of $56.19 billion in October, compared with an outflow of $34.43 billion in September. Among equity funds, world equity funds (U.S. funds that invest primarily overseas) posted an outflow of $5.91 billion in October, versus an outflow of $1.78 billion in September. Funds that invest primarily in the United States had an outflow of $50.28 billion in October, versus an outflow of $32.64 billion in September.

Hybrid funds posted an outflow of $6.79 billion in October, compared with an outflow of $4.67 billion in September.

Bond funds had an inflow of $32.42 billion in October, compared with an inflow of $33.39 billion in September.

Index funds
Equity funds posted an inflow of $60.12 billion in October, compared with an inflow of $29.67 billion in September. Among equity funds, world equity funds (U.S. funds that invest primarily overseas) posted an inflow of $22.59 billion in October, versus an inflow of $15.23 billion in September. Funds that invest primarily in the United States had an inflow of $37.54 billion in October, versus an inflow of $14.45 billion in September.

Hybrid funds posted an outflow of $176 million in October, compared with an outflow of $10 million in September.

Bond funds had an inflow of $41.75 billion in October, compared with an inflow of $35.25 billion in September.
