Target Retirement Date Funds

This resource hub contains the latest ICI news, statements, publications, research, and policy work on target date funds.

Overview

Target retirement date funds, which are also called target date funds (TDFs) or lifecycle funds, are one of the most important innovations in retirement savings. These funds provide a convenient way for a retirement plan participant to purchase a mix of asset classes, professionally designed and managed, that is rebalanced and becomes less focused on growth and more focused on income as the fund approaches and passes its target date (usually included in the fund’s name). As of year-end 2024, approximately $4.0 trillion was invested in target date funds, including about $2.0 trillion in target date mutual funds.
